9:30 a.m. University Welcome featuring Benjamin Ajak, author of They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky, with Judy A. Bernstein
Wharton Center

  • The Wharton Center hosts the University Welcome, which is the formal ceremony that marks the beginning of each academic year. President Lou Anna K. Simon, Provost Kim Wilcox and representatives from each of the undergraduate degree-granting colleges will welcome you to the "pioneer land-grant university." Additionally, student a cappella groups will perform and special guest Benjamin Ajak, author of They Pured Fire on Us From the
    Sky
    , the One Book One Community book will address you, the newest members of the MSU community. Please check your personalized Fall Welcome schedule for the time and location of the University Welcome you are to attend.

  • Student Engagement Sessions are “mini-courses” designed by faculty and staff members to provide new students information and skills that will promote your success. Two years of research indicates that students who attended the Student Engagement Sessions earned higher grades their first semester at Michigan State University than the students who did. Engagement sessions are the perfect opportunity to explore topics that are important and interesting to you in a small group setting.

  • Those students who are new to MSU but have attended another postsecondary institution prior to enrolling at MSU are expected to attend this session. Important information about such topics as transfer of credits, parking, and feeling connected to MSU will be highlighted.

  • Michigan State is proud of the history and traditions that make being a Spartan a unique and special experience. Join Sparty, the MSU Marching Band, community members, thousands of fellow students and many of the coaches and student-athletes in Breslin Center to learn the cheers, the songs, and catch the Spartan Spirit. Add to the festivities fantastic prizes such as book scholarships, free flights, and tickets to campus and local events and this is an event you can’t miss!

8:30 p.m. Moonlight Madness Shopping Spree, Meijer (2 locations) and Downtown East Lansing

  • Midnight Madness provides you a great opportunity to explore some of the stores, services and resources the greater East Lansing area has to offer. New MSU students can walk together to the downtown East Lansing area or hop onto a complimentary CATA (Capitol Area Transit Authority) bus to local Meijer stores. While you don’t have to spend money to join in the fun, more than 50 retailers are open for business to help students complete their residence hall room decorating, buy last minute school supplies, or stock-up on snacks for their rooms.

It's FREE!!

This FREE outdoor film series presents movies on a big screen in Valley Court Park, located behind Beaner's, in downtown East Lansing. The event will be canceled if it rains.

While you are there, enjoy cheesy pizza slices from Cottage Inn Pizza and ice cream treats from Melting Moments Homemade Ice Creams.

Don't forget to bring a blanket or lawn chair!
